Creating Wonderful Memories Together
For the past 11 years, the TAIPEI 101 fireworks display has created dazzling seconds of resplendence to become the premier New Year's Eve fireworks carnival in Taiwan. Together, we inspire the positive energy of happiness by celebrating each New Year with everyone; let us look forward to creating more wonderful, sparkling memories with the TAIPEI 101 fireworks display.
TAIPEI 101 was officially inaugurated on December 31, 2004, and a fireworks show costing NT$3 million was displayed in the first second of 2005. The World's Tallest Building became the first skyscraper to stage a fireworks show that astonished the world.
The rhythm of the fireworks display is combined with lighting on every floor to compose absolutely stunning visual aesthetics and tempo. Red and white fireworks were chosen as the theme to represent the joyfulness of traditional festivities, hoping to share the wonderful moment of New Year's Eve at TAIPEI 101 with the crowd, as well as to bring good fortune for the new year.
In 2006, in order to generate more interaction with the public, TAIPEI 101 created the unprecedented 128-second, high-tech fireworks show costing NT$20 million. Corporate sponsorship was secured for the first time, whose name was displayed on the tower exterior wall and generated tremendous marketing effect worldwide. About 400,000 people participated in the New Year's Eve event.
The fireworks display was the first to combine traditional fireworks with modern pyrotechnic technology. With precision computer-controlled systems, 8,101 shots of aerial fireworks were launched consecutively along with 12 programs bearing congratulatory meanings to enhance the resplendence of the fireworks display. At the climax of the show, 860 shots of mini mine fireworks were released to draw a perfect conclusion to the event with the 12th program "World's No.1". The sight was not only seen by people in Taiwan, but also close to 1 billion of people around the world through live coverage on CNN, NHK, CCTV, APTV, AP and Reuters, and they all experienced the awesome effects of TAIPEI 101's fireworks and lighting display and countdown.
The 3rd year of the New Year fireworks show was 188 seconds long with 9,100 shots and cost NT$30 million, also sponsored by an enterprise. The show attracted 500,000 people.
The fireworks display consisted of 19 programs, where colorful lights were applied to add color to the fireworks for a richer, more vibrant presentation when compared with previous years. In terms of launching technique, the "secondary explosion" design was employed, where the firework rounds stayed airborne for longer and detonated for the second time to create special effects such as fireflies flying through the night sky. For the finale of the 188-second fireworks display, the 19th program "Reaching the Peak of Perfection" featured a fireworks waterfall pouring down from a height of 500m to wish everyone prosperity and success for the new year.
The TAIPEI 101 New Year fireworks show became a global phenomenon; the 188-second, 12,000-shot fireworks show was sponsored by the Tourism Bureau, with the theme of "2008 Golden Resplendence". Compared to the fireworks show of 2007, which was also 188 seconds long, 3,000 additional shots were added for 2008 to increase intensity, quality and quantity. An estimated 650,000 people attended the New Year countdown event with theme of "Love ♥ TAIWAN".
The 2008 New Year's fireworks were all about the presentation of color; the first half consisted of vibrant colored fireworks, symbolizing TAIPEI 101 bidding farewell to the exciting days of the past year with the public, while the second half of the display adopted a rare golden color theme, representing happiness, wealth and resplendence for the year 2008. In terms of fireworks deployment, the launch position was elevated and the diameter of the shots was increased to 3 inches to shoot the fireworks higher than the 508m tip of TAIPEI 101 for the first time.
For 2009, unique creative elements were introduced for the TAIPEI 101 fireworks show, hoping to provide the audience with refreshing entertainment. Also sponsored by the Tourism Bureau, the 188-second, 16,000-shot, 12 programs fireworks show once again adopted the "Love ♥ TAIWAN" theme.
This year's fireworks featured red, gold and green as the main colors to symbolize "Good Luck", "Wealth" and "Environmental Friendliness" respectively. Fiery, heart-shaped fireworks appeared for the first time and were dedicated to the audience. In particular, an unique downward aerial fireworks launching technique was attempted so that the patterns could be presented nearer to the public, in turn creating fireworks closest to the audience for an awe-inspiring experience. Moreover, in addition to music, the concussion effect of the fireworks ten times louder than that of Yanshui Fireworks Festival was presented to the crowd. Last but not least, eco-friendly fireworks were deployed to reduce smoke, thereby protecting the environment without affecting the visual effect.
The 6th TAIPEI 101 fireworks show was sponsored by a private company, releasing 22,000 shots in 188 seconds. In 2009, Typhoon Morakot caused serious flooding and great loss, in order to pray for Taiwan and comfort the public via the 2010 New Year's fireworks show, TAIPEI 101's exterior wall displayed lighting of "TAIWAN UP".
The fireworks display opened with "Flash Thunder Fireworks" to initiate the countdown followed by the 2-stage "Parade Bouquet", which are secondary aerial fireworks that create running and flying effects. After the starburst fireworks were discharged in different directions, a spectacular visual effect was created. Furthermore, 3-inch tube was used for longer range and grander scale, and the "Bouquet Fireworks" was deployed for the first time in a horizontal, 180-degree fashion to form the image of flourishing prosperity. At the same time, the "Candlelight and Fire-wheel Fireworks" combination intertwined to create a mesh of fire and spinning fire wheels, pushing the envelope of aerial/ground combo fireworks. In addition, the computerized fireworks with contrasting colors further highlighted the colorfulness of the fireworks display. The vibrant colors used include: gold, silver, red, green, blue, violet and even yellow, which was seldom used in previous years.
Duration: 288 seconds
Number of shots: 30,000
Designer: Cai Guo-Qiang
Pyrotechnic Contractor: Giant Show Co., Ltd., and Grucci
To celebrate the ROC's 100th anniversary, the 2011 fireworks show saw the implementation of unprecedented creativity as well as the breakthrough of near-impossible engineering and technical challenges, breaking the records set over the past 7 years. The longest fireworks show in history lasting 288 seconds and involving 30,000 shots was designed by renowned international pyrotechnic artist Cai Guo-Qiang and sponsored by ten government owned companies, costing NT$60 million, the most expensive ever. The tower's exterior showed lighting of "100 R♥C". Over 820,000 people gathered to watch the fireworks show consisting of 12 splendid programs.
The 2011 TAIPEI 101 fireworks display set a new record with 3 characteristics:
1. Challenging the limit of skyscrapers, whole building firework deployment.
At the time, TAIPEI 101 was the only skyscraper that could launch fireworks from multiple levels. Previously, scaffolding was assembled along the building's 8 outdoor balconies and used as fireworks launching platforms. This time, by pushing the boundaries, vertical cable wires were installed between the balconies on every eight floors so that pyro-technicians could install fireworks, and they managed to overcome the unprecedented challenge. In total, 1,800 launch pads were installed to form a mesh of intricate fireworks. As the launch was no longer limited by platform height and position, more boundless spatial creativities was unleashed.
2. Designed by pyrotechnics master Cai Guo-Qiang, and staged by international teams for the first time.
In addition to the exceptional design by world famous Master in pyrotechnics Cai guo-Qiang, the team also included New York pyrotechnics company Grucci, which has over 150 years of experience. International experts working with local Giant Show Co., Ltd., who has worked with TAIPEI 101 for several years, and scaffolding expert Lidou Scaffolding Co., Ltd., jointly created astounding and splendid visual effects through exceptional creativity and installation techniques.
3. Graphical fireworks shooting over the tip of the tower to light up Taipei sky
The fireworks reached the tip of TAIPEI 101 TOWER at a height of 508m. In addition, graphic images were infused into the fireworks, including "Thousand Layer Silver Cascade" and "Dancing Rainbow", imbuing each program with themes and characteristics in order to celebrate the ROC Centennial in unique style.
The 1st program "100-second Thunder" kicked off during the first second of 2011, where thunderous fireworks celebrated the grand national occasion. With TAIPEI 101 as the main scene, 10 surrounding buildings and the New Year's Eve celebration at Dajia Park launched 100 seconds of concussion fireworks in unison, creating an earthshaking, bustling visual and aural effect to represent the progress of the ROC, thereby paying homage to the 100 years of the founding of the nation.
The 2nd program "Skyscraper Built from Ground Up" saw 1,369 shots of fireworks launched skywards along the four corners of the building to sculpt the silhouette of TAIPEI 101 in the night sky, signifying the historical progress of ROC over the past century and the architectural accomplishments of TAIPEI 101.
The 3rd program "Red Lantern" utilized 1,618 red flares suspended outside the building that illuminated for 20 seconds, lighting up TAIPEI 101 like a red gem or lantern hanging from the night sky, thereby endowing the event with a rich Eastern festive atmosphere.
The 4th program "Thousand Layer Silver Cascade" was launched from top to bottom in 56 different layers, transforming the building into an ultra-tall vertical waterfall that exuberated with poetic meaning.
The 5th program "Rising Success" saw green garb fireworks launch upwards and branch out like bamboo leaves to represent TAIPEI 101's bamboo node inspired façade design, symbolizing the sustainability of traditional Chinese architecture and wishing everyone to reach new heights by taking on challenges in the new year.
The 6th program "Blooming Blossom" featured orange, violet and pink colored flowers blooming on the building's façade to forge the power of beauty under the Taipei night sky.
The 7th program "Spiraling Dragon of Auspiciousness" saw golden flames spiraling up from the bottom of the building like a towering dragon pillar. The golden dragon took off, spiraled and soared into the sky as a symbol of economic prosperity.
The 8th program "Giant Pagoda of Glory" made use of the building's structural design to transform the modern architecture into an elegant pagoda.
The 9th program "Dancing Rainbow" took advantage of the seamless vertical installations to present a constantly flowing, vibrantly-colored rainbow of fireworks.
The 10th program "Rainbow Colored Cubes" transformed the seven dous of TAIPEI 101 into rotating color cubes to create the illusion of a spinning Rubik's Cube.
The 11th program "Skyrocket" opened with downward firing fireworks to mimic the propulsion of a rocket followed by plenty of golden fireworks that portray the visual effect of a rocket launching into the sky.
The 12th program "Fiery Trees and Silver Flowers" saw silver flames shooting in all directions and angles from different floors to create a sea of fireworks. Finally, the climax of the fireworks display featured multiple flares launching from different floors of the building to light up Taipei City and wish that the next centennial of the ROC will be just as splendid.
Crossing into the 101st year since the founding of Republic of China, TAIPEI 101 declared its determination in surpassing perfection and continuing to move forward and make breakthroughs. Boasting the highest density and innovations such as multi-layers and angles, the 202-second, 30,000-shot fireworks show was funded by TAIPEI 101 itself, attracting over 800,000 people.
Different from traditional launching methods, computerized single ignition design was adopted for this year's show. In total, 18 programs were designed, with one-off fireworks constituting 50% of the entire show to satisfy the spectators' taste for splendid fireworks. The other 50% consisted of dynamic, constantly varying fireworks that were launched on various floors. In conjunction with the diverse launch angles made possible by the scaffolding and graphics presented using the suspended cable wires, the audience was treated to a brand new experience in the first second of 2012.
Each year, TAIPEI 101 displays a New Year's message on its façade. For this year, the winning message of blessing selected from 18,454 netizens was shown on the tower and broadcasted live online video platform across 150 countries. For the first time, LED lights were installed on the exterior wall of TAIPEI 101, not only more energy efficient, but also brighter effect. Unlike previous years, where only one message could be displayed, at the 101st second of this year's fireworks display, the four walls of the tower displayed the words "TAIPEI 101", while at the 202nd second, when the fireworks show drew to an end, three sets of words "HAPPY NEW YEAR", "TAIWAN TOP" and "TAIPEI 101 Welcomes 2012" were displayed in different colors and graphics. The messages were displayed in a stationary, scrolling fashion or an alternation of the two to express TAIPEI 101's New Year wishes for the citizens of Taipei.
The 9th TAIPEI 101 fireworks show was once again sponsored by the Tourism Bureau, with the theme "Time for Taiwan". First time designed and produced by Groupe F, a professional French pyrotechnics company, the elegant, French style 198-second fireworks show include a 10-second countdown fireworks, firing 22,000 shots in total.
International professional pyrotechnics company Groupe F from France custom-designed a New Year's fireworks display for TAIPEI 101 based on the concept of "Firebird" and the theme of "Swing for the Future", consisting of 4 programs. The first program "Bidding Farewell to the Past" featured red and blue displays along with fast-paced and inspiring music, signifying that the past year has gone by with the bursting of fireworks. The second program "Elegant Dancing" saw fireworks of red, blue, green, purple and gold colors launching upwards from the bottom to depict the image of a dancer dancing to the soft music and sparkling lights in the sky to romantically welcome 2013. The third program "Challenge New Heights" featured colorful fireworks launching in a linear fashion at different angles to reflect the image of future prosperity and encourage everyone to challenge themselves to reach new peaks. The fourth program "Embrace the Future" continued the majestic demeanor of the third program with layers of fireworks blossoming like flowers and countless reflections of glass wall to embrace the prosperous new year.
The "low smoke" fireworks were specially airlifted from Europe and featured advantages such as reduced smoke and rich colors to present a visually stunning display. The fireworks also employed GPS technology to significantly improve accuracy and complexity so that the fireworks show could be matched closely with the background music to showcase an exquisite, flawless performance of fireworks show.

Designed and produced again by Groupe F, sponsored by an international corporation, the 10th TAIPEI 101 fireworks show featured 218 seconds and 24,000 shots. For the first time, the fireworks show was accompanied by exclusive theme music produced by Golden Melody Award producer Judy Wu and maestro soundtrack composer Fan Zong-pei and complemented by ancient and indigenous tribal singing performance from Taiwu Village. In celebrating the decennial of TAIPEI 101, the fireworks show had the theme of "Sparks of A Decade" and had 10 programs.
The first program "Dazzling Appearance" was based on purple and golden firework patterns that ended with the number "10" in the sky to mark TAIPEI 101's decennial. The first program not only raised the curtain for 2014, but also prayed for blessings for the Year of the Golden Horse. Pyrotechnics Contractor: Groupe F
Composer: Lee Che-yi
Music performance: Taipei Symphony Orchestra
In welcoming 2015, TAIPEI 101 conducted a fireworks display lasting 218 seconds with 23,000 shots. The event was sponsored by the iSee Taiwan Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting the beauty of Taiwan internationally so that the world would know Taiwan. This philosophy is consistent with TAIPEI 101's ideals, therefore the theme of the fireworks display was "iSee Taiwan – Love and cherish Taiwan".
The theme score of this fireworks extravaganza was inspired by renowned Italian musician Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and ingeniously blended with popular classic Taiwanese folk songs such as "Memories", "The Coquette Teases the Doyen", "Tea Picking Song" and "DiuDiuDeng". The fireworks display consisted of four programs based on the "Four Seasons" to let people reflect on the past year and look forward to the future. Furthermore, through the internationally acclaimed event, the Taiwanese folk songs can also be appreciated across the globe with the fireworks display.
Before the fireworks show officially commenced, a 20-second indigenous a cappella singing performance led the crowd to start the countdown. The meaning of the lyrics was "welcome", symbolizing the welcoming of a brand new year and introducing good fortune for Taiwan.
Program 1:"Spring + Memories"
Golden, yellow and red fireworks took the lead of the show to portray the vivacity of nature after the long winter. The spotty fireworks danced in the sky like fairies to welcome the arrival of Spring. Starting from the 12th second, blue, purple and pink fireworks led the audience into the new year with the folk song "Memories" from Hengchun, southernmost town in Taiwan.
Program 2: "Summer + The Coquette Teases the Doyen"
The fast violin and spotty fireworks represented the hasty summer rain, followed by innovative, geometric figures in the sky to introduce a futuristic ambiance and symbolize a brand new beginning in 2015. Starting from 1'50", the Taiwanese folk song "The Coquette Teases the Doyen" was complemented by golden colored fireworks to depict the scene of thriving life in the summertime.
Program 3: "Autumn + Tea Picking Song"
The rhythm of a waltz paved the way for an abundant season of harvesting, and the fan-shaped, rotating fireworks are complemented by different-colored fireworks launched from the top of the tower to demonstrate Goupe F's precision design. After 2'14", the ascending fireworks were accompanied by the Taiwanese folk song "Tea Picking Song" to resemble a bumper crop in autumn and wish for an abundant harvest in 2015.
Program 4: "Winter + DiuDiuDeng"
The fast violin performance was supported by fireworks displaying the number "101" in the sky. Immediately after that, the bustling rhythm of the Taiwanese folk song "DiuDiuDeng" led everyone to reflect on their hard work over the past year, while blue, red, purple, yellow, golden and white fireworks were launched to spice up the atmosphere of the event. Besides expressing the joyful mood of people during the winter season, the fireworks display also brought a full year of good luck for the audience.
The fireworks extravaganza drew to a conclusion amid the indigenous a cappella singing performance. The lyrics of the song have the meaning of "welcome" to welcome the brand new year of 2015.
